ABUJA: A gas tanker crashed, then exploded in north central Nigeriathat killed at least 12 people, police said Friday.
The tanker suffered a brake failure along a main road in Ofu municipality, Kogi state on Thursday evening when it collided with a vehicle blocking the highway, triggering a fireball, a police spokesman told The Associated Press.
The vehicle “crushed cars on the way” and all victims were burned, it said William Ovye Aya with the Kogi Police Command.
Bisi Kazeem with Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps said other people were injured in the crash.
The road has been closed and road safety officers are working to identify the victims, Casemate said.
Such accidents are so common along most major roads in Nigeria that the country has introduced new measures to curb their occurrence. A similar crash in September killed more than 10 people in Kogi.
