BEIJING: Seventeen people died and 22 injured in a traffic accident in eastern China on Sunday Jiangxi provincestate media reported.
“In the accident, 17 people died, 22 people were injured, the injured were taken to hospital,” the state broadcaster reports. CCTV reported, citing local authorities.
The “major traffic accident” occurred just before 1am (1700 GMT). Nanchang provinceit reported.
“The cause of the accident is being thoroughly investigated,” CCTV added.
About an hour after the news broke, the Nanchang County traffic police issued travel tips to motorists who said the area was experiencing “foggy weather”.
“Visibility when driving is poor, there is poor visibility, which can easily cause traffic accidents,” it said.
“Please pay attention to fog lights…slow down, drive carefully, keep a safe distance from the car in front, avoid pedestrians, do not change lanes or overtake,” it added.
Road accidents are common in China due to a lack of strict safety controls.
Last month, a person died in a traffic jam in central China involving hundreds of vehicles and was caused by poor visibility in fog.
And in September, 27 passengers died after a bus transported them to quarantine facilities in the Southwest province of Guizhou tilted on a highway.
