QUITO: A size 6.5 earthquake shook one Island region of Ecuador on Saturday, causing residents to run from buildings, but there were no immediate official reports of this injury to people or infrastructure.
Social media users reported some damage to buildings in the area following the earthquake, which had an epicenter 29 kilometers (18.02 mi) from the city of Balao in Guayas province. Those reports could not be independently verified by Reuters.
Authorities said it did not appear likely that the quake would trigger a tsunami.
State-run oil company Petroecuador said there were no reports of damage to facilities and “operations are continuing as normal”.
