CAIRO – On Tuesday, a building in a neighborhood in the Egyptian capital Cairo collapsed, killing at least three people, the city’s emergency services said.

The five-storey residential building crashed in the densely populated area of Imbaba, a civil defense official said. It was not immediately clear what caused the collapse.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to inform the media, said search and rescue workers searched the rubble for survivors. He said the fall of the building had also caused the balconies of neighboring buildings to crash.

Building collapse is common in Egypt, where shoddy construction and lack of maintenance are widespread in slums, poor urban areas and rural areas.

In June, six people were killed in a building collapse in Cairo. In 2022, a single collapse killed 25 people, but a 6-year-old baby survived the disaster.

With real estate in major cities like Cairo and the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, developers seeking greater profits often violate building permits. Additional floors are often added without proper permits.

The country’s government has been trying to curb illegal building in recent years after decades of lax enforcement. But the megacity still contains entire neighborhoods of unlicensed red brick apartment buildings and slums.
