biden: Biden, Mexico’s president to discuss immigration in virtual talks – Times of India

WASHINGTON: US President Joe Biden and Mexican Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador will discuss the increasingly controversial issue of migration across their common border this week, the White House said Tuesday.
Friday’s virtual meeting will cover the neighbors’ economy, security and energy, press secretary Jen Psaki said.
They will also discuss the regional summit of the Americas in June “and how North America can lead the way in priority initiatives for the region.”
However, the most watched topic is probably what Psaki called “migration cooperation.”
The problem of heavy flows of potential migrants and asylum seekers through Mexico and into the southern United States is a political hot potato for Biden ahead of November’s midterm parliamentary elections.
Biden’s Democratic Party is on the defensive against Republican attacks that the situation on the US-Mexico border is spiraling out of control, while the White House says it is up to Congress to pass laws establishing what Psaki calls a “broken immigration system.”
The issue is bubbling up again with the scheduled May 23 expiration of the Title 42 policy, a health rule that allowed for the rapid expulsion of undocumented migrants as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
There are concerns that lifting these restrictions will dramatically increase the already large influx of migrants.
However, following a lawsuit by a group of southern US states, a court on Monday issued a temporary suspension against the waiver of Title 42.
Another front in the migration battle opened Tuesday in the Supreme Court hearing arguments over Biden’s attempt to suspend a policy by his predecessor Donald Trump forcing asylum seekers to remain in Mexico while their cases are pending.
Trump imposed the rule as part of his hard-line policy, popular with the far right, while critics called it inhumane, forcing the already desperate people into dangerous conditions on the Mexican side of the border.
