Blinken says Putin is not ‘serious’ about Ukrainian diplomacy – Times of India

WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Tuesday that despite a series of international efforts, Russian President Vladimir Putin has not shown serious diplomacy to end the war in Ukraine.
“We have seen no sign so far that President Putin is serious about meaningful negotiations,” Blinken told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
While the United States would diplomatically support Ukraine’s efforts to end the war, Blinken said: “Our aim is to ensure they have the ability to fend off Russian aggression and, indeed, to strengthen their hand against any negotiating table.”
Blinken responded to a question from Senator Rand Paul, a Republican who has criticized US interventionism, who accused President Joe Biden of contributing to Putin’s decision to invade by “beating the drum to bring Ukraine into NATO.” to allow”.
The top US diplomat replied that in talks with Russia ahead of the February 24 invasion, it became clear that Putin’s complaints about Ukraine’s entry into the Western alliance were a pretext.
“We’ve tried to get them seriously involved in these issues,” Blinken said.
“It is obvious – in President Putin’s own words – that it was never about Ukraine’s potential part of NATO and that it was always about his belief that Ukraine does not deserve to be a sovereign, independent country.”
