Blinken warns of “many months” conflict between Russia and Ukraine

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the escalation will only stop if Russia stops its aggression.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Wednesday that Ukraine had pledged not to use new long-range missiles to invade Russia, while warning of “many months” of conflict ahead.

“The Ukrainians have assured us that they will not use these systems against targets on Russian soil,” Blinken said at a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.

“There is a strong bond of trust between Ukraine and the United States, as well as with our allies and partners,” he said.

The United States said on Tuesday it will provide Ukraine with advanced missile systems, including Himars’ multiple-launch missile system that can launch multiple precision-guided missiles simultaneously.

President Joe Biden said the United States would not support attacks in Russia, quickly warning of greater risks of conflict between Washington and Moscow.

Blinken said the United States was arming Ukraine in anticipation of a long conflict.

“As far as we can judge now, we are still looking at many months of conflict,” Blinken said.

“That could be over tomorrow if Russia chooses to end the aggression. We see no signs of that at the moment,” he said.

“As long as this continues, we want to make sure Ukraine has what it needs to defend itself and we want to make sure Russia feels strong pressure from as many countries as possible to end the aggression,” he said. †

Blinken rejected suggestions that the United States risked escalation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who invaded Ukraine in February despite repeated Western warnings.

“It is Russia that attacks Ukraine, not the other way around,” Blinken said.

“And simply put, the best way to prevent escalation is for Russia to stop the aggression and the war it has started. It is completely in its power to do that.”
