Car plows into pedestrians in China, at least 5 dead CNN

At least five people were killed and 13 others injured when a car accelerated through pedestrians at an intersection in southern China’s Guangzhou hub on Wednesday night, state media said.

Videos circulating on social media that were geolocated by CNN appeared to show the vehicle, a black SUV, plowing through pedestrians at two separate intersections at the four-way intersection in a busy, upscale commercial area of the city with 19 million inhabitants.

Another video, circulating online and cited by state media, appears to show the driver throwing handfuls of cash from his vehicle after pulling over to the side of the road.

Local authorities said police had “checked” the driver, a 22-year-old man from Guangdong province, and further investigations were underway.

The incident took place during the 5:25 pm rush hour, when many scooters, cars and pedestrians could be seen on the road.

Police and medical personnel were immediately dispatched, local authorities said, who also confirmed the number of casualties.

An eyewitness, quoted in a report by the state-run China News Service, said the vehicle plowed through pedestrians at the intersection without stopping afterwards.

Although the incident was reported by China’s official media, it was not one of the trending topics on the country’s heavily monitored social media platform, Weibo, on Thursday morning.
