“China closely monitors conflict between Russia and Ukraine”: US intelligence director

William Burns said this would not shift China’s long-term goals of taking control of Taiwan.

US Central Intelligence Agency director William Burns said on Saturday that Beijing is closely monitoring Russia’s conflict in Ukraine and that it is influencing China’s calculations on Taiwan.

Burns, speaking at a Financial Times event in Washington, said the Chinese government has been struck by Ukraine’s fierce resistance to the Russian invasion and by the economic costs Russia is bearing. “These are things they weigh very carefully,” Burns said.

However, he warned that it would not shift China’s long-term goals.

“I don’t think for a moment that has eroded Beijing’s determination to take control of Taiwan,” Burns said. “But I think it’s something that influences their calculation of how and when they do that.”
