China is considering easing entry rules for some foreign tourists

(CNN) — The Chinese government on Monday, September 19, issued draft rules designed to boost tourism along the border and make it easier for some foreigners to enter China.

According to a draft policy paper released Monday by China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, tour companies organized by travel agencies in China’s border regions can “flexibly” choose their port of arrival and departure. dates were not specified.

China has closed its borders to foreign tourists since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, allowing only certain groups of foreigners to enter the country, such as those with a valid visa.

In recent weeks, the Chinese government has significantly tightened Covid restrictions to contain the spread of the highly transmissible Omicron variant. In September, several megacities were placed in full or partial lockdown.

Under the new draft policy, foreign tourists are allowed to visit China’s border tourist sites, but only as part of tour groups.

The policy did not specify whether those entering are still required to meet China’s inbound traveler quarantine requirements, which consist of a week of hotel quarantine and three days of home observation.

China shares a border with 14 countries, including Russia, Mongolia, Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar.
