China reports first human case of H3N8 bird flu

China: A four-year-old boy found to be infected with the bird flu virus (Representational)

China has registered the first human infection with the H3N8 strain of bird flu in Henan province, media reports said Tuesday.

China’s National Health Commission (NHC) announced the matter in a statement, but said the risk of spreading to humans was low.

A four-year-old boy was found to be infected with the virus after developing various symptoms, including a fever.

According to NHC, there are no close contacts infected with the virus.

The child had been in contact with chickens and crows raised in his home, it added.

The health commission said the H3N8 variant has previously been found in horses, dogs, birds and seals elsewhere in the world. However, it has been added that no cases of H3N8 have been reported in humans.

An initial assessment found that the variant did not yet have the ability to effectively infect humans, and the risk of a large-scale epidemic was low, it added.
