David Carrick: London police officer David Carrick pleads guilty to 24 counts of rape | World News – Times of India

LONDON: A portion London police officer has admitted to committing 24 counts of rape in a nearly two-decade campaign of abuse against women, making him one of Britain’s most prolific sex offenders.
The metropolitan police and the country’s prosecution service said David Carrik48, had used his position of power to control and intimidate his victims, telling them that no one would take their word for it unlike that of a serving officer.
The Met police, already struggling with a collapse in public confidence following a series of scandals, apologized for not noticing the pattern of abuse sooner.
“This man has abused women in the most disgusting way. It is sickening. We have failed women and girls and indeed we have failed Londoners,” said Police Commissioner Mark Rowley said in a statement.
‘We failed. And I’m sorry. He shouldn’t have become a police officer.’
A spokesman for British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called the case “appalling” and Mayor Sadiq of London Khan said serious questions needed to be answered after Carrick pleaded guilty to 49 charges related to 12 victims between 2003 and 2020.
“This is a horrific case and the prime minister’s thoughts are with all his victims,” Sunak’s spokesman said. “Police departments must weed out these officers to restore public confidence, which has been shattered by high-profile events such as this one.”
Met Assistant Commissioner Barbara Gray said the pattern of abusive behavior should have been noticed sooner.
“Because we didn’t, we missed opportunities to remove him from the organization,” she said. “We sincerely regret that Carrick was able to continue to use his role as a police officer to prolong the suffering of his victims.”
Carrick, who joined the Met in 2001, isolated women socially and financially, often holding them against their will, monitoring what they wore and when they slept.
London’s Metropolitan Police was given “special measures” last year after being pummeled by revelations about a culture of bullying, racial discrimination and misogyny among some of its officers.
“Serious questions need to be answered about how he could abuse his position as an officer in this appalling way,” Mayor Khan said.
Carrick will be sentenced on February 6.
The Met issued an apology on Monday, praising the victims’ courage in coming forward.
The Met’s Gray said work to identify and free corrupt cops was “determined”, “focused” and ongoing.
Rowley was appointed London Police Chief in July last year to clean it up, vowing to sack any officers who were corrupt, racist and broke the law.
An independent review of the London Force said in October it needed “radical” reform over how it dealt with allegations of misconduct faced by hundreds of staff and officers.
The review came into effect in 2021 after an officer was sentenced to life in prison for the rape and murder of Sarah Everard.
