On Friday, TwitterNew owner Elon Musk sent a company-wide email to employees of the social media giant thanking them for their long working days since he took over on October 28.

Musk said he also stayed at Twitter’s headquarters in San Francisco late Thursday night. He then invited employees who have returned to the San Francisco office and who survived last week’s 50% cut in staff numbers to visit him.

Overnight, Twitter appeared to be pausing its $7.99/month Twitter Blue subscription service, which allowed social network users to pay to get a blue check for verified subscribers. Many users misused the new subscriber badge to impersonate brands and famous people who had been given a blue check through the company’s original verification system.

Among the brands that were imitated were Eli Lilly, the pharmaceutical giant, the video game multinational Nintendo, and Elon Musk’s electric vehicle company, Tesla.

Two current Twitter employees told CNBC they were getting calls from colleagues and customers about all the changes to the platform.

One said Twitter used to make product changes slower and more cautious, because they needed to balance user behavior, security, and revenue impact. The new, more experimental approach Musk is taking has alarmed many, including advertisers and even the FTC.

Employees also said they wanted more clarity about the company’s new time off and return to office policies and that Elon Musk’s email left them with questions. Friday is a national holiday in the US, Veterans Day, and some employees didn’t expect to come, while others wonder if they still have approved exemptions that allow them to continue working from home. Two employees told CNBC they have not received formal guidance from the company’s human resources department about remote working.

This week, Musk told Twitter employees that he was reversing the company’s previous “work from home” policy, issued by his personal friend and collaborator, former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey.

Here’s Elon Musk’s email to Twitter employees on Friday, transcribed by CNBC:

Subject Being There (great movie)

I was on Twitter late into the night again yesterday and would like to express my appreciation to those who were with me, as well as those who worked remotely, some of whom were up even longer.

Again, working remotely is fine if you can’t reasonably get to the office and you’re performing at an exceptional level. That said, I’m a big believer in the esprit de corps and effectiveness of being physically in the same location.

I’m back at the office today. Drop by on the 10th floor if you want to talk about taking Twitter to the next level. The priority is on short-term actions.

Thank you,

Elon
