Elon Musk pauses the relaunch of Twitter’s $8 Blue Tick plan

Musk had defended the paid verification plan saying the blue check will be the “big leveler”.

New Delhi:

Elon Musk announced on Tuesday that the relaunch of the ‘Blue Verified’ badge on Twitter will be temporarily suspended “until there is high confidence in stopping imitation”.

After acquiring the social media platform, Musk introduced the $8 blue tick verification plan, but it resulted in an explosion of many fake accounts.

“Delaying the relaunch of Blue Verified until there is high confidence in stopping imitation. Will likely use a different color check for organizations than for individuals,” Musk tweeted.

Musk had defended the much-criticized paid verification plan, saying the blue tick will be the “big leveler”.

“Widespread verification will democratize journalism and amplify the voice of the people,” he tweeted.

However, the plan backfired when verified handles changed their username to “Elon Musk” to test the new Twitter owner who describes himself as a “free speech absolutist.” Thousands of such accounts were suspended, including that of comedian Kathy Griffin who had two million followers on the platform.

Musk recently conducted a poll to reinstate former US President Donald Trump’s suspended account. About 15 million people voted on Twitter, marking a small victory for those who supported the move.
