EU chief von der Leyen wants Putin to face ICC over Ukraine – Times of India

BERLIN: EU chief Ursula von der Leyen said in an interview on Thursday that she wants Russian President Vladimir Putin to appear before the International Criminal Court for war crimes in Ukraine.
“That Putin to lose this war and face his actions, that is important to me,” she told the TV channel of the German news center Bild.
There is no doubt that war crimes have been committed in Ukraine, said von der Leyen, who also visited Kiev on Thursday.
“That’s why we support the collection of evidence” with a view to possible proceedings in the International Criminal Court, she said.
“That’s the basis of our international justice system, that we punish these crimes. And ultimately Putin is responsible,” she said.
When asked if Putin would ever appear in court, she replied: “I believe it is possible.”
During her visit to Ukraine for talks on closer integration with the European Union, von der Leyen promised that the war-torn country would have Europe’s support for “as long as it takes”.
