German customs officers seize cocaine worth $44.3 million

BERLIN — German customs officials seized 635 kilograms of cocaine among bananas shipped from Ecuador, authorities said Monday.

The cocaine, compressed into blocks and wrapped in plastic film, was found in several packages in Duisburg in western Germany on Oct. 27, the customs office in nearby Essen said.

The packages were sandwiched between bananas in a container that was shipped from Ecuador and had arrived in Germany via the Dutch port of Vlissingen. Employees of the company where the bananas were delivered noticed the packages and notified customs.
