German FM urges swift decision on tank supply to Ukraine

BERLIN — Germany’s foreign minister is pressing Chancellor Olaf Scholz to decide soon whether Ukraine will provide advanced tanks as it tries to reclaim more of its conquered territory from Russia.

Kiev has said it would like German Leopard-2 tanks, but Berlin has so far rejected that request while providing other weapons such as howitzers and self-propelled anti-aircraft weapons.

In an interview published Thursday with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said a decision on supplying Ukraine with modern battle tanks can only be taken jointly by Germany’s ruling tri-party coalition and its international partners.

“But in the decisive phase that Ukraine is currently in, I also do not believe that it is a decision that can be postponed for a long time,” she said.

Economy Minister Robert Habeck, a fellow Greens member, said on Thursday he expected Germany to supply more of “the right weapons” to Ukraine soon.

The far-right Alternative for Germany party, which is not in government and has close ties to Moscow, meanwhile warned against supplying tanks to Ukraine.

“The war in Ukraine is not our war,” said co-leader Tino Chrupalla. Instead, he called on Germany to open the Nord Stream 2 pipeline so the country can import gas from Russia.

Meanwhile, Germany’s defense minister announced on Thursday that her country would send two additional MARS II missile systems for multiple launches to Ukraine, as well as 50 DINGO armored vehicles.
