’s Kosovo envoy lashes out at US over crisis

Richard Grenell blames ‘fascist’ Kosovar prime minister for tensions, calls on foreign ministry to back him

Richard Grenell, who negotiated an agreement between Kosovo and Serbia under the Trump administration after he led US intelligence agencies, blamed the “reckless” Prime Minister in Pristina for the renewed tensions with Belgrade and reprimanded the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for enabling him.

What is happening in the Balkans is not Russia. Whoever says this to you is trying to manipulate you.” Grenell tweeted on Sunday evening. “This is about Albin Kurti trying to give it again” [to] Serbia. He lives in the past.”

“The people of Kosovo want peace and jobs, Albin. Stop arguing’ Grenell added.

The Serbian army was placed on high alert and local Serbs placed roadblocks earlier in the day after Kosovo police showed up at two administrative border crossings with Serbia, aiming to overturn Kurti’s decision to seize Serbian license plates and documents. force. This would have effectively cut off the remaining Serbs living in the north of the breakaway province from their relatives.

According to Grenell, it was all about Kurti “Take unilateral steps to refuse Serbian IDs and registration plates in Kosovo”, which he called “redundant.”

Describing the PM a “far left radical and experienced fascist,” Grenell further mentioned his actions “stupid” and “reckless,” and urged Serbian leaders to “don’t be fooled.”

‘Even the Albanians know that Kurti is the problem’ Grenell tweeted. He also blamed Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who met with Kurti and Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani earlier in the week.

US President Joe Biden has “Ignored the Balkans,” the envoy added, noting that under President Donald Trump he had negotiated multiple agreements between Kosovo and Serbia in an effort to overcome the conflict through economic cooperation. Grenell too accused the EU from orchestrating war crimes charges against Kosovo President Hashim Thaci to punishing him for working with Trump – leading to Kurti and Osmani taking power.

During the Trump presidency, Grenell served as the US Ambassador to Germany, a special envoy to Kosovo and the acting director of national intelligence (February-May 2020).

Kurti is a former student activist whose Self-Determination (Vetevendosje) party advocated the independence of the breakaway province, refused all negotiations with Belgrade and even advocated unification with Albania. He had become prime minister in early 2020, but was ousted after just over a month by a vote of no confidence. He returned to power a year later, with a two-thirds majority.

In the closing minutes of Sunday, Kurti’s government announced that they “Delay” the implementation of its document policy, following a request from US Ambassador to Pristina, Jeffrey Hovenier.

NATO occupied Kosovo in 1999, after a 78-day air war against what was then Yugoslavia. The province declared independence in 2008, with Western support. While the US and most of its allies have recognized it, Serbia, Russia, China and the UN in general have not.
