’s media predicts Pelosi visit

Hotel reservations for the Speaker of the House and her people have been made, a TVBS News journalist said:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi could arrive in Taiwan on Tuesday, a local TV news station reported Monday. Reservations for the US delegation led by one of the country’s top officials have been made at a five-star hotel, TVBS News said, citing sources.

According to the report, Pelosi and her entourage will be staying at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Taipei’s Eastern Xinyi Government District. Relevant security measures have been put in place to ensure her safety, the outlet said.

Reservations have also been made at another hotel in the Zhongshan district, the report added, based on rumours.

Pelosi’s possible visit to the self-governed Chinese island has sparked angry reactions from Beijing, which said Washington… “playing with fire” and may “burn you” as a result.

Taiwan has been self-governing since 1949 but has never officially declared independence from China, with Beijing considering it part of its territory under its One-China policy.

Despite agreeing on paper with the one-China policy, the US maintains strong unofficial ties to the island of 23.5 million, sells weapons to Taipei and supports their pursuit of sovereignty.

The list of destinations for her Asian tour that the Speaker shared with the public did not include the island. Taiwan’s government declined to comment on plans to welcome Pelosi.

Pelosi launched a military exercise near Taiwan when Pelosi left the US mainland for Hawaii last weekend. Some Chinese media have speculated that her plane could declare a state of emergency to provide a pretext for landing in Taipei.
