crashes into lake in Tanzania


A passenger plane crashed into Lake Victoria in Tanzania on Sunday as it attempted to land in bad weather at an airport in the northwest African city of Bukoba.

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has confirmed the accident and called on the public to remain calm in a tweet while a rescue operation is underway.

So far, 15 passengers have been rescued from the water, state-owned Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) reports.

There is no information yet on fatalities or the number of people on board the plane, which belonged to Tanzania’s largest private airline, Precision Air.

The plane, which took off from the capital Dar es Salaam, crashed into Lake Victoria in the morning. “storm and heavy rain”, according to TB.

Photos and videos of the scene showed the plane was almost completely submerged, with only the tail sticking out of the water.

The plane was surrounded by boats as local fishermen helped rescuers search for survivors.
