West returns to Twitter

Twitter has reinstated Kanye’s account “thou” West, restoring the rapper’s voice on social media. The news came on Sunday, shortly after long-banned former US President Donald Trump was also brought back to the platform.

“test, test,” West tweeted. “See if my Twitter is unblocked.” The post was apparently visible to other Twitter users, with more than 600,000 likes in five hours and an avalanche of comments.

West’s Twitter account had been blocked since Oct. 9, preventing him from posting new messages, after saying he was going “kill con 3 on jewish people. The funny thing is that I can’t actually be anti-Semitic, because black people are actually Jewish too. You played with me and tried to blacken everyone who opposes your agenda.’

West has nearly 32 million followers on Twitter. The rapper and fashion entrepreneur has been closely watched as a barometer of how billionaire Elon Musk will transform the platform after acquiring the company for $44 billion last month. Musk vowed to make Twitter a bulwark of free speech, and it was “important for the future of civilization” to have a digital city square where a wide range of beliefs can be discussed.

Musk brought Trump’s account back to the website on Saturday, 22 months after the then president was banned from social media platforms following the U.S. Capitol riot. Tesla’s CEO had conducted a Twitter poll on whether Trump should be allowed to return. The poll drew more than 15 million votes, with 51.8% favoring recovery. However, Trump said no “see a reason” to resume using Twitter as he has built a strong following on his own platform, Truth Social.

West’s return to the platform came on the same day NBA star Kyrie Irving was allowed to return to court following a suspension for posting a link to a documentary containing anti-Semitic material. At first, he refused to apologize or tell reporters that he had no anti-Semitic beliefs.
