A mass shooting took place Saturday night during the Lunar New Year celebrations in California’s Monterey Park. While police have yet to provide details of the casualties, media reports suggest at least 10 people were killed and 16 injured.

According to local media, the incident took place after 10:30 p.m. Police were called after reports of an active shooter near 122 West Garvey Avenue in eastern Los Angeles. Authorities have yet to release the exact number of dead and injured.

Video on social media shows first responders rushing to the area, as well as several people being taken to hospitals.

It was not immediately clear if the shooter was in police custody or still on the loose.

A local business owner told The Los Angeles Times that after the gunfire erupted, three people stormed into his restaurant and told him to lock the doors. They said the suspect was a man with what appeared to be an automatic weapon.

The tragedy occurred as tens of thousands of people gathered in the afternoon for a two-day Chinese New Year festival.
