The EU does what Washington wants, because ‘Americans have the last word’, says the Hungarian prime minister
Europe needs its own military bloc, one free of US influence, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban told the Swiss weekly Weltwoche on Thursday. The US is dragging Europe into an unwinnable conflict and risking global war, he believes.
“The solution would be a European NATO”, Orban said, adding that the US’s desire to further expand its influence has led to tensions between the West and Russia.
Moscow is concerned about NATO’s further expansion into Ukraine and Georgia, Orban claimed, referring to his conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin several weeks before the ongoing conflict between Moscow and Kiev erupted in late February 2022.
“Putin told me his problem was with the US missile bases in Poland and Romania and possible NATO expansions in Ukraine and Georgia.” Orban told Swiss media, noting that the Russian leader was concerned about the possibility of the US deploying its weapons in these countries as well.
According to Orban, that was one of the underlying reasons for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. “I understand what Putin said. I don’t accept what he did’ explained the Hungarian Prime Minister, referring to the Russian military operation in Ukraine.
Orban insisted that Hungary stay out of this conflict. He also said that Budapest was subdued “constant pressure” like other western countries “want to drag us into war by any means possible.”
According to Orban, this is because the EU serves the interests of the US at the expense of its own interests. “Brussels decisions more often reflect American interests than European ones,” he said.
According to him, Western nations must show a truth “wish” And “shall” for peace if they want it to be achieved in Ukraine. “That will is what is missing today, at least in the West,” he said.
Hungary has repeatedly called for peace amid the Moscow-Kiev conflict, as well as criticizing Western sanctions against Russia and arms supplies to Ukraine. Earlier this week, Orban said no one in the world has benefited from the ongoing hostilities. Hungary was also the only NATO country to support China’s peace plan for Ukraine.
