Hurricane Agatha made landfall Monday afternoon in southern Mexico just west of Puerto Angel, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Agatha had rapidly intensified in the eastern Pacific and approached the status of a major hurricane Sunday evening as it approached the southern coast of Mexico.

Agatha, the season’s first hurricane in the eastern Pacific, made landfall as a Category 2 storm with winds of 105 mph.

A hurricane warning is in effect from Salina Cruz to Lagunas de Chacahua. Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect for Salina Cruz heading east to Boca de Pijijiapan and Lagunas de Chacahua heading west to Punta Maldonado.

Agatha will continue to produce strong winds, dangerous storm surges and flooding rains for the next 24 hours as it slowly moves inland.

“A rapid weakening is expected after the landfall and Agatha is expected to disappear over southeastern Mexico by the end of Tuesday,” the hurricane center said.

The hurricane center warns that storm surge is expected to continue to cause extremely dangerous coastal flooding in areas near and east of where Agatha’s center made landfall. Heavy rain will fall in parts of southern Mexico until Tuesday night. The heaviest rain is expected in Oaxaca, with a forecast of 10 to 16 inches and isolated areas potentially receiving up to 20 inches. Life-threatening flash floods and mudslides can occur.

“The heaviest rain is forecast in the Mexican state of Oaxaca, where 10 to 16 inches is expected, but isolated totals of up to 20 inches are possible,” the Hurricane Center said.

According to the National Hurricane Center’s Atlantic Tropical Weather Outlook, Agatha’s remains may contribute to the gradual development of a tropical system in the “far southwest of the Gulf of Mexico around midweek or in the northwest Caribbean by midweek.” the last part of this week”.
