There was no immediate response from the Taliban.
The semi-official Iranian news agency Tasnim, which is close to Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guards, said the Taliban opened fire on houses on the eastern edge of the province, in the area of Shoqalak, across the border with Afghanistan’s Nimruz province. .
The report also said that Taliban forces attempted to raise the Taliban flag in an area that is not part of Afghanistan’s territory and that calm returned after the exchange.
Since the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan last August, there have been repeated clashes between Iranian security forces and Afghan Taliban forces in various places along the border. The firefights often revolve around local issues such as disputes over farmland, water or smuggling, and usually end quickly.
In some of the worst clashes last December, the Afghan Taliban took several checkpoints on the Iranian side, but they quickly withdrew, with both sides calling the incident a “misunderstanding.”
