Multiple missiles were reportedly aimed at Damascus airport and areas south of the capital

At least five Syrian soldiers have been killed in a “Israeli Air Aggression” after midnight on Saturday, state news agency SANA reported citing a military source.

“This morning at about 0.45 am, the Israeli enemy launched an airstrike with missiles from the northeast direction of the Sea of Tiberias (Sea of Galilee), targeting Damascus International Airport and some points south of Damascus,” a source told SANA.

While the Syrian air defense “shot a number” of missiles, the military acknowledged the deaths of at least five “military personnel and some material losses” to the ground.

The Israeli military neither confirms nor denies the reported raids in line with its long-standing policy of not commenting on operations conducted beyond its borders.

In recent weeks, Israel has carried out multiple strikes against various targets in Syria, in particular the two remaining major airports, as confirmed by the Russian Defense Ministry. On August 31, a rocket attack temporarily disabled Aleppo International Airport and also caused damage to Damascus. A week later, on September 6, another missile hit the runway at Aleppo airport.

Israel bombed two Syrian airports – Russia

In June, a series of Israeli attacks saw the Damascus airport shut down for several weeks, diverting traffic to Aleppo – which only reopened in February 2020, after it was damaged during the decade-long civil war.

Israel has repeatedly attacked Syria with missiles, usually fired from Lebanese airspace or the occupied Golan Heights, wary of air defense systems supplied by Russia to Damascus. On the rare occasions that Israel has acknowledged the attacks, the government said it is using preemptive self-defense against the Iranian presence in the neighboring country.

Tehran has in recent years offered military aid to Damascus against both Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) terrorists and other jihadist militants. Israel alleges Iran is using civilian flights to Syria to smuggle weapons and missile parts to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

A senior Israel Defense Forces officer told reporters on Thursday that Hezbollah and other… “Iran-backed militias” appeared to withdraw from Syria as “a consequence of the IDF attacks.”
