TEL AVIV: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday his government intends to proceed with an overhaul of the country’s legal system, despite fierce criticism from the summit legal officials and protests against the changes drew tens of thousands of people. Netanyahu has made the legislative changes the centerpiece of his new administration’s agenda, and growing opposition to them poses an early challenge to the Israeli leader.
The revision would weaken the power of the Supreme Court, give lawmakers the ability to pass laws the court struck down by a simple majority, and give the government more power over the appointment of judges and limit the independence of legal advisers from the government . The proposed changes have drawn protest from SC’s top judge, who in rare criticism called the revision an “unbridled attack on the justice system”. Netanyahu told his cabinet that voters cast their ballots in elections in support of his campaign pledge to overhaul the justice system.
