Key events that led to the invasion of Brazil’s Supreme Court, Congress


Supporters of ex-President Bolsonaro raided Brazil’s Supreme Court, Congress and Presidential Palace.

Below is a timeline of key events leading up to the January 8 invasion of Brazil’s Supreme Court, Congress and Presidential Palace by supporters of far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro, who supported the election of left-wing President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva disputed.


Oct 30 – Lula, who was president from 2003 to 2011, narrowly beats Bolsonaro in a second round. Bolsonaro supporters gather outside military bases across Brazil for the first time, calling for military intervention to prevent Lula from returning to office.

October 30 and 31 – Truckers supporting Bolsonaro block roads across the country after his defeat.

November 2 – Bolsonaro supporters hold rallies across the country, asking for the intervention of the armed forces.

Nov. 22 – Bolsonaro is contesting the results of Brazil’s election, arguing that votes from some machines should be “invalid” in a complaint that election authorities rejected.

December 12 – Lula’s election victory is upheld by the federal electoral tribunal. Later that day, following the arrest of a pro-Bolsonaro indigenous leader for alleged anti-democratic acts, Bolsonaro supporters attempt to raid the federal police headquarters in Brasilia, the capital.

December 24 – A man is arrested for attempting to detonate a bomb in protest of Brazil’s election results. A copy of George Washington de Oliveira Sousa’s police statement, seen by Reuters, showed that he was inspired to build an arsenal by Bolsonaro’s traditional support for civilian arming.

December 29 – At least four people are arrested by Brazilian police for an alleged coup attempt during riots by Bolsonaro supporters.

December 30 – Bolsonaro lands in Florida less than two days before Lula takes office.


January 1 – Lula is sworn in as president for a third time, saying democracy was the true winner of the presidential election.

8 Jan. – Bolsonaro supporters raid Brazil’s presidential palace, Congress and Supreme Court in Brasilia, in a grim echo of the invasion of the US Capitol two years ago by backers of former President Donald Trump.
