Smoke billowed from the area and there was a heavy police and military presence after Kiev mayor Vitali Klitschko announced on social media that there had been explosions in the capital’s Darnyrsky district.
Russia’s defense ministry said Moscow’s troops had used “high-precision long-range weapons” to hit facilities at an arms factory in Kiev.
The attack on the Ukrainian capital is one of the first since invading Russian forces began withdrawing from the regions around Kiev last month, instead turning their attention to gaining control of the eastern Donbas region.
However, Russian attacks on Friday hit the Vizar factory, near the capital’s international airport, severely damaging the missile-producing facility during the nighttime strikes.
Russia said it had used long-range missiles at sea to hit the factory, which, according to the Ukrainian state arms manufacturer, produced Neptune cruise missiles.
Klitschko said authorities were still determining if anyone was killed or injured in the attack.
Residential areas of Kiev were repeatedly hit at the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in late February. Moscow denies deliberately attacking civilian infrastructure.
