BRASÍLIA — Thousands of radical supporters of far-right ex-president Jair Bolsonaro breached and vandalized Brazil’s presidential office building, Congress and Supreme Court on Sunday in scenes that terrifyingly evoked the January 6, 2021 uprising at the Capitol by supporters of the president. Donald Trump.

The attack — the biggest threat to democracy in Latin America’s largest country since a military coup in 1964 — came a week after President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was inaugurated as Bolsonaro’s successor. It suggested a spreading plague of far-right disruptors in Western democracies as hardliners radicalized by inflammatory political rhetoric refuse to accept electoral losses, cling to baseless claims of fraud and undermine the rule of law.
