A multi-storey building has collapsed in the northwestern Nigerian city of Kano, trapping “many” people, according to the local fire department.
The rescue operation is underway, the Kano Fire Department’s press service said.
According to Nura Abdullahi, the local coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), eight people have been rescued so far.
The building faces a market, with several shops on the ground floor, he said.
“The building was under construction, but the ground floor was occupied,” Abdullahi told CNN, adding that people are believed to have been shopping there when the building collapsed.
“We cannot make a rough estimate of the number of people detained,” he said.
This is a story in development. More to come….
