MEXICO CITY — The newly formed Hurricane Frank quickly gained strength over the open eastern Pacific on Saturday, but it posed far from a threat to the mainland.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Frank reached hurricane strength late Friday and received maximum sustained winds of 90 mph (150 kph) Saturday afternoon.

It was centered about 970 kilometers southwest of the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula and was heading northwest at 19 mph.

The hurricane center said Frank could strengthen slightly before weakening over cooler waters.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Georgette was much further out to sea, with maximum sustained winds of about 80 km/h. Forecasters said it was expected to weaken gradually in the coming days.
