WARSAW: Polish rescuers have reached a miner trapped underground since a quake shook the Borynia-Zofiowka mine in southern Poland Saturday morning, a mine official said Tuesday.
Two mines of the state-owned JSW have suffered fatal accidents in the past week, and the Polish prime minister has said safety standards will be checked.
“Just before 3 p.m., a team from the Central Mine Rescue Station reached one of the victims,” Marcin Golebiowski, a director of the mine, told state news agency PAP.
“Efforts are currently underway to submerge him and transport the injured man to base and then to the surface.”
Of the 52 workers who were in the mine when the quake struck, 42 managed to escape on their own. Six of those trapped underground have since been found dead.
“We will try to locate the other three employees,” Golebiowski said.
