WASHINGTON: Prime Minister Narendra modesmessage to Russian President Vladimir Putin during their meeting on the sidelines of the SCO summit in Uzbekistan “is a statement of principle” of what he deems “good and just” and it “was very welcomed” by the US, the White House Tuesday said.
During his meeting with Putin in Samarkand, the city of Samarkand in Uzbekistan, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit concluded last week, Modi told the Russian president: “The present era is not an era of war, and I have telephoned you about this spoken.”
For his part, Putin told Modi that he was aware of India’s concerns about the conflict in Ukraine and that Russia will do everything possible to end it as soon as possible.
In response to a question about Modi’s comments, US National Security Adviser Jake . said Sullivan told reporters at a White House press conference that what the prime minister said was “a statement of principle on behalf of what he believes is right and just (and) it was much welcomed by the US.”
The comment by the Indian leadership, which has long-standing relations with Moscow, of telling Russia that it is now time to end the war is commendable, he said.
And the way this war must end is for Russia to abide by the basic terms of the UN Charter and return the territories it has taken by force. This is a message that every country — despite how they feel about Russia, Ukraine and the US — “should be able to focus on this basic proposal,” Sullivan said.
“You cannot conquer your neighbor’s territory by force. Peace will come quickly and decisively to Ukraine if Russia ceases that effort. And we would like to see every country in the world advocate that. They can do it publicly if they want. can do it privately if they want to. But right now sending that clear and unmistakable message to Moscow is the most important thing. I think we can do together to bring about peace in that region,” he added.
