Problems ahead? Emmanuel Macron’s sneakers are causing a stir online – Times of India

PARIS: French President Emmanuel macronThe choice of shoes on his trip to London ahead of the Queen’s funeral caused a flurry of comment – and misinformation – online.
The 44-year-old leader was photographed on Sunday walking outside the door Westminster Hall with his wife Brigitte where the late British sovereign was laid out for her funeral on Monday.
Instead of his usual suit and formal black leather shoes, Macron looked unusually casual, wearing sunglasses and – to the surprise of some observers – navy blue trainers.
Spurred on by critical comments online, French talk show radio station RMC hosted a debate Monday about whether seeing streetwear on the president on such an occasion was “shocking”, with presenter Estelle Dennis insisting that there was “a dress code to respect”.
The newspaper Le Figaro called them the “trainers of discord”.
Other media outlets tried to correct a growing social media story, fueled by far-right politicians and critics of the president, that Macron had worn trainers to the Queen’s funeral, which took place on Monday.
“No, Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron have not paid their respects to the queen in trainers,” according to an article by the national channel TF1.
By the time the French leader and his wife paid their respects to the coffin on Sunday, both had changed into more formal attire, with Macron in a black suit and tie.
The couple wore similar formal attire for the state funeral at Westminster Abbey, where they arrived on a bus along with other leaders.
However, the photos did draw attention to Macron’s expensive tastes — a possible liability for a man criticized by critics as the “president of the rich” and after a summer where he was pictured riding a jet ski while on vacation.
The sneakers in question are made by luxury French fashion brand JM Weston, according to Le Figaro, and sell for 570 euros ($570) a pair.
