Saudi Arabia inflicted one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history as Salem Al-Dawsari’s stunning solo effort netted a 2-1 victory over Argentina in Group C at the Lusail Iconic Stadium.
Time stood still as Al-Dawsari plucked the ball from the air and spun in two Argentine defenders before curling his finish out of reach of Aston Villa defender Emiliano Martinez to deliver one of the greatest moments of all World Cup finals.
Lionel Messi had put one of the pre-tournament favorites ahead from the penalty spot after a contentious VAR decision (10), but Saleh Al-Shehri leveled after three minutes in the second period to deliver an almighty surprise .
The result ended Argentina’s 36-match unbeaten run, dating back to the defeat to Brazil three years ago, but it was the greatest day in Saudi Arabian football history.
La Albiceleste last lost their first World Cup group stage match in 1990 – against Cameroon – but they reached the final where they lost to Germany, but that will be of little consolation to the South Americans at this point after the defeat to the country that placed on the 51st place is world football.
