BEIJING/CHENGDU: The powerful earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale that shook China’s Sichuan province on Wednesday affected more than 13,000 people and damaged five hydroelectric power plants, in addition to extensive damage to many homes, local rescue officials said Thursday.
Four people have been killed and 41 injured in the earthquake that ravaged Lushan Province in Sichuan Province’s Ya’an Province on Wednesday evening.
The epicenter, which is 17 kilometers deep, was monitored at latitude 30.4 degrees north and longitude 102.9 degrees east, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC).
The provincial earthquake administration said the 6.1 magnitude earthquake in Lushan was an aftershock of a 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck the province in 2013.
Ya’an was struck again by a third earthquake, measuring 3.2 on Thursday morning, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center, after being struck by two quakes on Wednesday.
The earthquake-prone Sichuan Province is located on the seismically active Tibetan Plateau.
More than 90,000 people were killed in the earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale in 2008, which caused extensive damage to life and property.
In Wednesday’s quake, a total of 13,081 people in the city were affected by the quakes, while 135 houses were severely damaged and 4,374 houses were slightly damaged, official media outlets quoted local officials as saying.
In addition, five hydroelectric power plants in Lushan County have been damaged and several people have been evacuated. The dead and injured were in Lushan and Baoxing provinces, respectively.
According to local authorities, more than 800 municipal reinforcements have been organized in the city of Ya’an to conduct search and rescue operations, treat the injured, scramble the road and relocate the people affected by the earthquake.
So far, 200 tents, 1,000 quilts and 200 tent lamps have been sent to Lushan and Baoxing provinces, local officials said, adding that 61 temporary shelters, 34 in Baoxing and 27 in Lushan, respectively, were set up to accommodate 12,722 people affected by the disaster. , according to official media reports.
