Brazil reported the first monkeypox-related death outside the African continent earlier on Friday in the current wave of the disease.
According to a July 22 report by the World Health Organization, only five deaths had been reported worldwide, all in the African region.
The WHO declared the rapidly spreading outbreak a global health emergency on Saturday, the highest alert level.
In its latest report, the Spanish Ministry of Health said 4,298 cases had been confirmed in the country. Of the 3,750 patients it had information about, 120 had been hospitalized and one had died, without providing further details.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Health declined to provide further details about the deceased person.
