Sri Lankan Gunathilaka accused of sexual assault

Gunathilaka has played eight Tests, 47 one-day internationals and 46 Twenty20s for Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan batter Danushka Gunathilaka has been charged with an alleged assault during the T20 World Cup in Australia.

He has been charged with four counts of sexual intercourse without consent and denied bail in a Sydney court.

Gunathilaka, 31, was arrested at the team hotel shortly before 1 a.m. local time on Sunday morning.

He allegedly sexually assaulted a 29-year-old woman on Wednesday, November 2.

The arrest came hours after Sri Lanka’s last game of the World Cup – a four-wicket defeat to England on Saturday.

Gunathilaka was ruled out of the tournament with an injury on October 20, but had stayed with the squad in Australia.

New South Wales police say he met the woman after communicating over a dating app for several days.

A Sri Lanka Cricket statement said: “Sri Lanka Cricket confirms it has been informed by the ICC [International Cricket Council] that player Danushka Gunathilaka has been arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a woman in Sydney, and Mr Gunathilaka is due to appear in court tomorrow (November 7).

“SLC will closely monitor the proceedings in court and, in consultation with the ICC, will promptly conduct a thorough investigation into the case and take stern action against the player if found guilty.”
