Switzerland closes airspace

Takeoff and landing will be halted at Zurich and Geneva airports, forcing incoming flights to be rerouted

Switzerland closed its airspace early on Wednesday for safety reasons after a failure in the country’s air traffic control system.

“This airspace closure is in effect until further notice”, said air traffic control service Skyguide, adding that it was in the process of “technical failure”.

The move has paralyzed the country’s main airports in Zurich and Geneva, which have halted all landings and take-offs.

Zurich airport said passengers were allowed in and check-ins were underway, but boarding had been suspended.

Planes bound for Switzerland have to reroute to airports in other countries, a Skyguide spokesperson told Radio SFR.
