The US is sending another $550 million worth of weapons to Ukraine.

WASHINGTON — The White House announced Monday that the United States would send an additional $550 million in weapons to Ukraine to help it fend off Russian invaders, taking total U.S. investment in warfare there to more than $8 billion since the invasion began in February.

President Biden approved the latest package when the first cargo ship carrying food finally left the Ukrainian port city of Odessa after months of Russian blockade, in accordance with an agreement with Moscow. The White House called on the Kremlin to stick to the pact to alleviate a growing food crisis around the world.

“Russia has weaponized food, of course,” said John F. Kirby, a spokesman for the National Security Council. “We urge Russia to fulfill its obligations under this new arrangement.”

Mr Kirby said Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken; Gene. Mark A. Milley, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; and Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser, had briefed their Ukrainian colleagues on the new arms shipments on Monday. Mr Blinken said in a statement that he authorizes the purchase of weapons and equipment from the Ministry of Defense inventories for Ukraine’s self-defense.
